How thermal imaging works (in plain English)
Every object emits infrared radiation in proportion to its temperature. A thermal camera reads that radiation and converts it to a false-colour image — typically warm areas show as yellow/red and cool areas as blue/purple. What's the best time of day for a thermal survey?
Pre-dawn or early morning, when buildings have cooled overnight and the temperature differential is highest. For heat loss surveys, we need indoor heating on and outdoor temperature below ~10°C.
Can thermal see through walls?
No. It only reads surface temperature. But surface temperature reveals what's happening just below — wet insulation, missing studwork, hot pipework — which is usually what you want to know.
Will my insurer accept a thermal report as evidence?
