7 Questions to Ask a Drone Pilot Before You Hire Them
Not every drone operator is set up for commercial work. Before you hire a pilot for a roof inspection, wedding, construction site or marketing film, it is worth asking a few key questions. The right answers protect you from poor-quality footage, legal problems and invalid insurance.
Here are seven questions we encourage every customer to ask — including the answers you should expect.
1. Are you CAA certified?
Commercial drone flights in the UK must be operated by a pilot who holds the correct CAA certification. Ask for their Operator ID and a CAA operational authorisation. A professional pilot will share this without hesitation.
2. Do you have public liability insurance?
Accidents are rare, but insurance matters. Look for at least £1 million public liability cover. If the pilot cannot produce an insurance certificate, do not proceed.
3. What drone and camera will you use?
The right equipment depends on the job. A cinematic wedding film needs a high-resolution drone with a good gimbal; a thermal roof survey needs a radiometric thermal camera. Make sure the pilot has the right platform for the result you need.
4. Have you flown this type of job before?
Ask for relevant examples. Weddings, roof inspections, construction progress and thermal surveys each have different safety, lighting and workflow requirements.
5. How do you handle weather and cancellations?
A professional pilot will check the forecast, have a clear weather policy and reschedule without penalty if conditions are unsafe. Vague answers here are a red flag.
6. What deliverables do I receive, and when?
Confirm the file format, resolution, edit style and turnaround time. You should know exactly what you are getting before the flight happens.
7. Do you handle airspace checks and permissions?
Near airports, restricted zones and built-up areas, the pilot must check airspace and secure permissions where required. If they say this is your responsibility, look elsewhere.
